Ramachandra Rao. Reprint. Delhi, Satguru, 2003, 3 volumes, xviii, 1744 p.,

indian बुक्स

Encyclopaedia of Indian Iconography : Hinduism--Buddhism—Jainism/S.K. Ramachandra Rao. Reprint. Delhi, Satguru, 2003, 3 volumes, xviii, 1744 p.,
Rs.5000. US $255 (set). ISBN 81-7030-765-1.
"The present publication, Encyclopaedia of Indian Iconography, is intended to focus attention on the traditional details concerning images and their worship. The details given in these volumes are taken entirely from the traditional texts of Agama and Silpa-sastra, like Brhatsamhita, Manasara, Kasyapa-silpa, Isana-siva-guru-deva-paddhati, Silpa-ratna, Padma-samhita, Hayasirsa-samhita, Vaikhanasagama and Rupa-mandana. The entries include not only the Gods and Goddesses of popular so-called Hinduism, but also the divinities of Jaina (both Digambara and Svetambara divisions) and Buddhist (Mahayana) religions. The deities worshipped in Nepal and Tibet are also included. Sadhana-mala has been used for descriptions of Buddhist deities, and Rupa-mandana for Jaina deities. Most of the entries are illustrated by line-drawings of images in temples, monasteries, basadis and in museums. Topics of peripheral interest (like temple-construction, image-making worship rituals and Agama divisions) have also been included here.
"The volumes follow the Sanskrit alphabetical order (akaradi) to facilitate translation into Indian languages. The first volume begins with the words beginning with vowels in Sanskrit alphabet. Followed with mute consonants and the rest of the consonants in the subsequent volumes.
"Among various and synonymous names of the deities, the better known ones have been selected for entry, while cross-references also have been indicated. Wherever necessary, background stories for particular iconographical representations have been given."
Thanking You

Naresh Gupta

Indian Books Centre40/5,Shakti Nagar,Delhi- 110007Ph No. 91-11-2384 4930 2384 6497Fax No.91-11-2384 7336E-mail indianbookscentre@gmail.comibcindia@vsnl.comWebsite: http://www.indianbookscentre.com

Mimamsa Kosa.\ Ed.Swami Kewalananda Saraswati

indian bookMimamsa Kosa.\ Ed.Swami Kewalananda Saraswati

Mimamsa Kosa is not an ordinary dictionary but a mine of information on the Mimamsa System containing the original sources collected from a very wide range of Mimamsa Literature and selected literature of other systems of Indian Philosophy,Grammar and Vedic Texts .
This Kosa has proved to be foundation stone for deeper studies in Purvamimansa in particular and Indian Philosophy in general since its first publications.
7 Vols.Set. The presentation is state-wise, covering 25 modern states, in alphabetical order, from Andhra Pradesh to West Bengal. The most sacred shrines, sanctified by the Buddha, are in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. Three other states where the Best Buddhist heritage has survived are –Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. And the best gompas, monasteries in the high Himalayan Valleys where Buddhism has been a living faith through the ages, are in Arunachal Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh (Kashmir) and Sikkim.
"To make this volume complete in all respects, five additional notes have been added. These are on—the edicts of Asoka (3 century BC); Buddhist monasteries seen by Hiuen Tsang, the Chinese pilgrim, in the 7 century AD; sacred relics of the Buddha; Buddhist remains in Pakistan, and Buddhist sites in Bangla Desh. Kaelber

indian books

Tapta-Marga/ Walter O. Kaelber
Tapta-Marga Asceticism and Initiation in Vedic India Walter O. Kaelber
Delhi,Sri Satguru. Rs.200.
About the Book
"Kaelber takes a subject which looks obscure at first sight, digests, distills, and comments on a difficult body of scholarship, and then writes about it in a way that is easily accessible to any beginning reader on the subject while at the same time fresh, abrim with new insights, and a stimulating read for the scholar. He achieves this by persistently showing how tapas, in its many transformations, remains at the center of the mainstream of Vedic religion from its beginnings to its Upanishadic 'end.' I see this book as something we have long needed for the teaching of Hinduism: a good book with which to introduce students to the continuities of Vedic religion." -- Alf Hiltebeitel, George Washington University
This is the most comprehensive study yet made of tapas and of asceticism during the Vedic period. It also explains three other essential components of Vedic thought: sacrifice, homology, and knowledge. These concepts, along with tapas and initiation symbolism, reveal the heart of Vedic religion. therefore, this study presents a "history of Vedic religion," organized around the central building blocks of that tradition.
"This is an excellent study of an important topic in the history of Vedic religion. What I like best about the work is the way it reveals the variety of meanings and uses of tapas in different contexts to establish connections between natural, human, and cosmic realities and to maintain continuity between ritual tradition and the path of knowledge. This is a creative study that provides important new insights into the basic principles of Vedic religion." -- Thomas J. Hopkins, Franklin and Marshall College
Walter O. Kaelber is Professor of Religious Studies at Wagner College.
Table Of Contents
Acknowledgments Introduction The Vedic Inter-entities: An Overview Observations on Method 1. The last flight - beyond horizons. Glossary of Sanskrit words. Index.
"For a span of more than 50 years Ma Anandamayi treaded gracefully the spiritual horizon of India -- and in her wake followed top dignitaries, as well as the lowliest of the lowly, enchanted by her gentle dispensation of wisdom and love to all...
To the man in the street she was the guru' and confidante of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. All V.I.Ps visiting India made an appointment with her an item in their itineraries. No big religious function was held anywhere in the country without an invitation to her for her gracious and radiant presence on the dais.
The keepers of our heritage -- the ascetic orders of India were united in recognizing Ma Anandamayi as the quintessence of the Upanishadic tradition....scholars trained in modern universities derived inspiration from her. Ma Anandamayi by her presence in our midst during the most difficult decades of our times, consolidated our past and taught how to live in the very demanding times of the twentieth century and face up to the challenge of the twenty first. She was born in India but in herself she belongs to humanity (Colin Turnbull).
Swami Sivananda (Divine Life Society) had said that she was the finest flower that the soil of India had produced. Such question as whether she was an incarnation, a Siddha Yogin or the adya sakti (Pandit Gopinath Kaviraj) used to sink into irrelevancies in her presence. She was for everyone, man, women and child from all corners of the world, a guide of infallible power, a friend of unfailing compassion and understanding.
To Ma Anandamayi, there was no one who was an 'other'. In her we touched a dimension of unity which encompassed all religions and all countries. Each person in her presence found fulfilment and her presence is ever-abiding
Thanking You

Naresh Gupta

Indian Books Centre40/5,Shakti Nagar,Delhi- 110007Ph No. 91-11-2384 4930 2384 6497Fax No.91-11-2384 7336E-mail ibcindia@vsnl.comindianbookscentre@gmail.comWebsite: http://www.indianbookscentre.com

Umapati's Commentary on the Pauskaratantra, Chapter 7. Translation. 3. Text. Abbreviations and bibliography.

"The Pauskara, belonging to the class of literature generally known as Tantra or Agama, is an important text for the comprehension of Saiva philosophy. The seventh chapter of its doctrinal section (jnanapada) is not only a remarkable source of information on Saiva epistemology, but also a gold-mine of significant elements valuable for the study of early Indian logic. Umapati's commentary on this chapter introduces new features, sometimes in a post-15 century Navyanyaya dialectical style, and bears testimony to the evolution of Saiva epistemology.

This translation aims to bring an important aspect of Saiva philosophy to the attention of scholars and to facilitate comparative studies of Saiva epistemology."

Thanking You

Naresh Gupta

Indian Books Centre
40/5,
Shakti Nagar,
Delhi- 110007
Ph No. 91-11-2384 4930
2384 6497
Fax No.91-11-2384 7336
E-mail ibcindia@vsnl.com
Website: http://www.indianbookscentre.com

Oriental University Press

Oriental University Press

Indology Studies-Oriental,Asian & Sanskrit Studies

Indology Studies-Oriental,Asian & Sanskrit Studies

Bhrihat Parasara Hora Shastra

Bhrihat Parasara Hora Shastra

MSS Invited

indian books
MSS Invited
Dear Sir/ Madam,
We have the pleasure to introduce ourselves as one of the leading publishers of books on Religions and Philosophies.
We have published the books of eminent authors with us including Prof. John Vattanky, Dr. Vincent Sekhar, Dr. C.D. Griffiths, **
ISBN: 81-7030-606-X, Series: Bibliotheca Indo-Buddhica Series No.196
About the Book
Indian Buddhist philosophers say that it is possible to achieve, by specific meditational techniques, a distinctive ‘altered state’ which they call ‘the attainment of cessation’. In this state, the stream of mental events is temporarily brought to a complete halt: the practitioner becomes mindless. The possibility and desirability of such an altered state was extensively discussed by Buddhist thinkers in India. In these discussions, they were compelled to consider the causal connections between the mental and the physical, and thus to clarify their positions on what in the west has usually been called the mind-body problem. On Being Mindless presents these discussions to an English speaking readership for the first time, including analysis and translation of texts not previously available in English and, in some cases, of material not available in any Western language. Opposing fashionably relativistic approaches to non-Western philosophical traditions, Paul Griffiths critically comments upon the analyses of mindlessness given by Buddhist thinkers. He maintains that “the functions, nature, and limits of rationality are conceived similarly in all cultures” and rejects” that humility which, all too often in those Western academic circles where the study of Buddhist thought is carried on, refuses to take its material with philosophical seriousness”. On Being Mindless is a study in cross-cultural philosophy which should do much to increase awareness among Western scholars of the precision and subtlety of India Philosophical thinking. It may also encourage Western philosophers to look beyond the barriers of their own culture and language for serious philosophical analysis.
10. Fuller, US$ 10
ISBN: 81-7030-138-6, Series: Sri Garib das Oriental Series No. 63
From the preface:
"Much has been written about Yoga ever since the Theosophists "discovered" spiritual India, and not a little of a very uninformed nature which, in place of elucidating a complex mental science, has either perplexed the student or rendered the whole subject ridiculous. In this book it is my intention to abide by facts and simultaneously introduce sufficient cross references to other mystical systems, such as western magic and the Qabalah, to show that Yoga is one of a series of means of deliverance from worldly illusions. All these systems are closely related; for, in one sense, they and many others, such as Christian mysticism, Quietism, Buddhism, Taoism and Sufism, are spiritual languages the words of which differ in sound but the meanings of which are identical."
Other Interested Titles
17. Worship dealt with I the Agama necessarily involves images which are worship-worthy. The rituals and sequences that are elaborated in the Agama books find relevance only in the context of an icon which is contained in a shrine. And icons are meaningful only in the context of shrines and worship. Agama texts are not easily accessible to the people. A large number of them are still available only in manuscripts, some of them which have been printed are only in their Sanskrit originals. There is need, therefore, to present relevant excerpts from them at least, to make the volumes on iconography more meaningful. Further, Indian temples are to be considered only in the general framework of temple culture, which include not only religious and philosophical aspects also. The volumes named Agama Encyclopaedia named Agama Encyclopaaedia deals with the temple-culture and Agama framework, the sectarian division of the Agama into Saiva, Vaisnava and Sakta, and the topics selected from the Agama texts follow. Thus, the entirety of the Agama, literature in so far as it is relevant to the temple-culture is brought within the scope of the Agama Encyclopaedia.
2. The first chapter is Prakriti as it discusses creation. Chapters ii-xxiv deals with Prakriti-Vikriti. In this work, Siva is represented both as Saguna and Niguna according to how he is identified with Prakriti or differentiated from it. From Prakriti or Sakti arises Nada which gives rise to Bindu. The interesting features of this work are practices for subjugation of women, destruction of enemies and Tantras for malevolent purposes. Diksa, Purscarana and nyasa figures prominently in it chapters vii-xxii deals with the Mantras of Saraswati, Lakshmi, Bhuvneswari, Durga, Tripura, Ganesha and Candramas. This work contains list of works known and unknown. It draws materials from Astronomical and mathematical works. Though generally sober, this work lays down the six malevolent rites, and prescribes the propitiation of the respective presiding deities. In the circumstances there is a need for an authentic and comprehensive account of all three aspects of Srividya, viz. The Yantra, The Mantra and The Tantra. This Book is an attempt to provide one. Along with all textual details concerning the philosophy and practice of Srividya, relevant iconographic details with illustrations have also been given.
23.
